Continuing with major upgrades to the recently opened Mohegan Sun Casino and Racetrack CAM architect designed a 50,000 square foot paddock building for the 2009 race season. The size of the structure and proximity to the racetrack required both a specialized function and aesthetically pleasing building while keeping to a modest budget. The solution is a modified pre-engineered building with attached, ancillary CMU structures that accommodate the 144 horses for all 14 races. A large bank of clerestory windows provides daylight for the facility that includes a containment area for pre/post-race testing, driver’s dressing rooms, offices, lounges, and a cafe. Interior color will enliven the space and designate functional zones that assist in coordinating activities and directing users to appropriate locations. The use of fabric structures to shade and define exterior seating areas and manipulation of exterior material enhances the aesthetics while expressing functional differences within the structure.
