OAKLAND CEMETERY MAINTENANCE BLDG
Oakland Cemetery
Yonkers, NY
2009
UNBUILT
A project for a 2,000 square foot maintenance building in an historic cemetery in Yonkers, New York provided an opportunity to take a fresh approach in designing a utilitarian building. Creating an offset roofline allowed for the incorporation of day lighting features with clerestory windows that will reduce the use of electric lighting. The roofline further provided an option to incorporate photovoltaic panels or solar collectors in the future. The cantilevered roof overhang provides a shaded work and storage area which expands the usable space of the economical building while the visual interest created by the form and energy saving materials is a sensitive addition to the site. The skin is composed of energy saving Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) creating a continuous surface and resembles a fabric draped over space, the roof and ground merge together. The building provides for storage of cemetery maintenance equipment, workshop and personnel amenities, including a break room, kitchenette, restrooms, and shower / locker area.
